Measurement uncertainty

The Norwegian Metrology Service can achieve measurement uncertainties from ±0.005 °C for comparison calibrations. The achievable uncertainty depends on factors such as the customer’s thermometer and the desired temperature range.

Method

For calibration in the range –80 °C to 550 °C, calibration baths are used. For calibration in the range 550 °C to 1100 °C, furnaces are used. For calibration at –196 °C, a liquid nitrogen comparator is employed.

The calibration baths and furnaces can be adjusted to the exact temperatures requested by the customer. The Norwegian Metrology Service’s reference thermometer and the customer’s thermometer are immersed in the nitrogen comparator, calibration bath, or furnace and read when the temperature has stabilised sufficiently.
