DC voltage

Services offered

Type of standard Nominal voltage [V] Measurement uncertainty (2 standard deviations) [µV/V]
Zener 1 til 10 ± 0,4
Westoncelle 1,018 ± 0,4

For Zener standards, the calibration time is approximately 10 working days.
For Weston cell standards, the calibration time is approximately 10 working days after the standard has stabilised, which normally takes around four weeks.

Realisation of DC voltage

The unit of electrical direct voltage, the volt, is realised at the Norwegian Metrology Service using the quantum Josephson effect. This effect is, in principle, a frequency–DC voltage converter, where the relationship U = f · (h / 2e) · n is satisfied. Here U is the voltage, f is the frequency, h is Planck’s constant, e is the elementary charge, and n is an integer. The factor 2e/h is called the Josephson constant, Kj, and has the value 483597,9 GHz/V. This value is internationally agreed upon and used by all national laboratories that realise the Josephson effect.

The Norwegian Metrology Service’s voltage standards consist of groups of Zener standards. These are regularly calibrated against our Josephson voltage standard. The laboratory calibrates customers’ voltage standards using a fully automated measurement system.
