The enterprise’s responsibility vs. the role of the Norwegian Metrology Service
The Norwegian Metrology Service checks that measuring instruments used in commercial activity meet accuracy requirements and comply with the regulations. However, it is the enterprise itself that is responsible for ensuring that the measuring instruments they use always meet applicable requirements.
The Norwegian Metrology Service carries out supervision to ensure that measurements are reliable and fair for both seller and buyer. Supervision is based on risk assessment and may take place without prior notice.
The enterprise’s responsibility
As the owner or user of a measuring instrument you are responsible for ensuring that:
The instrument is approved and has undergone conformity assessment before being put into use
It measures correctly at all times and is used in accordance with requirements
Required notifications are submitted in case of repair or broken seals
Errors are corrected as soon as possible – or that the equipment is taken out of use
The equipment is available and prepared for supervision
Fees and charges related to supervision are paid
The role of the Norwegian Metrology Service
Risk-based supervision of measuring instruments
Assessment of declarations of conformity and approvals
Follow-up in cases of non-compliance (orders, fees, suspension)
