What does supervision entail?

The Norwegian Metrology Service supervises enterprises that own and use measuring instruments subject to accuracy requirements, such as scales, fuel dispensers or energy meters. During supervision we examine whether measuring instruments meet the requirements of the regulations, but regardless of whether we carry out supervision or not, it is the enterprise’s responsibility to ensure that the scales are in order. Our main objective is not to find errors, but to ensure that measurements are correct. Therefore, information and guidance are also an important part of supervision.

What is supervision, and why is it important?

During supervision we check whether measuring instruments and measurements meet accuracy requirements. We also verify that the instruments have the proper conformity assessment (approval), and in some cases we perform measurements to check that the instruments meet tolerance requirements. We can also set requirements for how the instrument is to be used, the environment in which it should be used, and how measurement results should be presented.

In some cases we may also require the enterprise to have its own control system to ensure compliance with the requirements. If the enterprise already has an internal control system, we may supervise that system instead of, or in addition to, ordinary supervision.

The most important thing is that the measurements performed are correct! When everyone can rely on Norwegian measurements, trade between different parties and across national borders becomes easier. Businesses and consumers can be confident that they receive what they pay for, which contributes to a fair and well-functioning society. The value of trust is simply invaluable.

Who is covered by supervision?

Supervision applies to enterprises that use measuring instruments in::

  • Trade: Such as scales in shops, fuel dispensers at filling stations..
  • Industry: Such as scales in production or storage.
  • Other sectors: For example fish landings, the taxi industry, or waste disposal sites.

What happens after a supervision?

Once the supervision has been completed, you will receive a report or a decision from the Norwegian Metrology Service. This contains information about the results of the supervision and any findings that require follow-up.

Understand your decision

Report (rapport) – Summarises the inspection and confirms whether your measuring instruments meet the requirements.

Decision (vedtak) – If deviations are found, you will receive a decision with:

  • Description of what must be corrected.
  • Deadline for remediation.
  • Any applicable fees.

How to correct deficiencies?

Read the decision carefully to understand what is required.

Carry out necessary actions, such as calibration or replacement of measuring instruments.

Document the follow-up and send confirmation to the Norwegian Metrology Service. Corrections must be reported via DinSide.
