Retail scales are used daily in shops, markets and industry to ensure correct weighing of goods. The Norwegian Metrology Service supervises these scales to make sure that consumers and businesses receive what they pay for, and that the scales comply with legal requirements.
The Norwegian Metrology Service uses knowledge about different types of scales and the risk of measurement errors as the basis for how much supervision should be carried out. Based on this, resources for supervision are allocated. Knowledge about the individual operator can influence who is selected for inspection. Random inspections are also conducted.
During supervision of trade scales, the Norwegian Metrology Service checks, among other things:
That the scale shows the correct weight
That the scale is CE marked and has the necessary type approval
That the scale is placed on a stable surface and used correctly
That the scale has no damage or defects that could affect the measurement
The Norwegian Metrology Service performs inspections of retail and checkout scales. Results from our statistics show that every 8th scale has an error. Almost without exception, these errors are to the disadvantage of the shop, and measurement errors can lead to major losses over time. With a few simple steps, such errors can be avoided, ensuring correct measurements – to the benefit of both you as a business owner and the customers shopping in your store.
Our findings show that a lack of knowledge about the use of checkout scales is largely the cause of measurement errors. These errors can occur even right after we have conducted an inspection. Therefore, we recommend that those responsible for checkout scales carry out a self-check to safeguard against such errors.
By performing self-checks on your checkout scales, you achieve three important things:

• You ensure that your customers trust your shop.
• You take an important step toward complying with the regulations.

Retail scales are subject to supervision by the Norwegian Metrology Service and should also be regularly checked by the enterprise itself.
