Measurement of reference distances

Reference distances are used for calibration and inspection of various measuring instruments employed by the Police, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the Norwegian Metrology Service, and others. The Norwegian Metrology Service performs measurement of such distances using GNSS systems mounted in service vehicles or hired vehicles, ensuring accurate measurements that form the basis for further use.

Reference distances measured on request

The Norwegian Metrology Service measures reference distances on request and assesses the suitability of the stretch with regard to:

  • road curvature and vertical alignment
  • type of road surface
  • edge marking
  • possibility of marking the stretch
  • clear view of satellites
  • potential obstacles, such as roundabouts, etc.

Requirements for the client

The request from the client must include details of the location of the stretch and the contact person.

During measurement, the client must assist the staff of the Norwegian Metrology Service and is responsible for safety during roadwork. Permanent marking of the start and stop points is the responsibility of the client.

The cost of measuring reference distances will depend on time spent, travel costs according to government rates, and any accommodation required.
