In service verification

In some cases, companies may need to document that their measuring instruments meet the requirements. The Norwegian Metrology Service can perform such controls by carrying out an in-service verification and issuing documentation.

What is an in service verification?

In-service verification is a control that confirms the measuring equipment meets requirements for accuracy (tolerance), robustness, and protection against external influences. The requirements tested and the standards applied are the same as those used for conformity assessment under the relevant EU directive (MID or NAWID).

In some cases, companies need equipment and metrological expertise they do not have themselves and want a neutral third party to document that their measuring instruments meet the necessary requirements. These are assignments carried out by the Norwegian Metrology Service upon request, and we will therefore ask for acceptance of the cost estimate before the assignment is confirmed.

Examples of assignments:

  • Measurement at tank facilities
  • Measurement in industrial settings
  • Testing of weighbridges
  • Measuring equipment used for monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions

The control is performed against the tolerance requirements applicable during use. If no deviations are found, a ‘Certificate of In-Service Verification’ and a ‘Report of In-Service Verification’ will automatically be issued.

However, it is important to note that if the measuring instrument does not meet the requirements, only a report will be issued, not a certificate. If having a certificate is important for the customer, it may be advantageous to have qualified service personnel present who can repair the instrument if deviations are detected while the Norwegian Metrology Service is on-site. We can then re-check after the repair and issue the certificate.
