OptiFish

OptiFish aims to develop, test and validate technologies that improve the monitoring of catch volumes and fish health on board. The Norwegian Metrology Service’s role is to prepare proposals for standards and test methods with technology-neutral requirements.

For European fisheries to operate more sustainably and meet regulatory control requirements, OptiFish seeks to develop, test and validate technologies that improve the reporting of fish health and catch volumes.

Today’s fisheries rely heavily on human observation and manual data registration, which is later reported to authorities. Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing occurs when countries fail, or choose not, to ensure that their fishing vessels comply with regulations, particularly in international waters and the exclusive economic zones of other nations. IUU fishing undermines international cooperation on the sustainable management of fish as a common resource.

The goal of OptiFish is to develop monitoring technologies that reduce discarding, unreported landings and unrecorded fishing activities. OptiFish technologies on board (including AI-based systems) will improve catch composition analysis, health assessment and reporting capabilities, regardless of vessel type.

The OptiFish project involves 18 partners from 8 countries, including the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries and SINTEF Ocean. Pilot testing will be carried out across five different fisheries, using five different technologies.
