Measurements that build trust in trade and society

Without a common understanding of measurements and units, the society will not function very well. That is why there is a need for a public authority to ensure this common understanding. The Norwegian Metrology Service is entrusted with this vital task: to ensure that you, businesses and public authorities can trust that Norwegian measurement results are sufficiently accurate.

How do we ensure trust in measurements?

The Norwegian Metrology Service works to guarantee accuracy and reliability in measurements that affect everyday life.

As a supervisory authority, we inspect measuring instruments used in grocery stores, petrol stations, the fisheries sector and other industries to ensure fair trade. We make sure that measurements meet national requirements, protecting consumers and ensuring fair competition in the market. The Norwegian Metrology Service is also a research organization, continuously developing measurement methods and maintaining national measurement standards.

Have you noticed something that seems incorrect?

It is the responsibility of the business operator to ensure that measurement results are correct. If you, as a consumer, suspect major discrepancies in a measurement, you should first contact the point of sale. If the matter is not resolved, you can contact the Norwegian Metrology Service.

How to proceed

  • Contact the business where the measurement was taken.
  • If the issue remains unresolved, contact the Norwegian Metrology Service via:

All enquiries are handled confidentially, and we will respond as soon as possible.
